What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic assists the body in healing itself by focusing on the nerve system and the spine. The immune system, circulatory system, and body organs all function better when the nerve system, housed by the spinal column, conducts information without interference.
Is chiropractic care only for people with neck and back pain?
No. Chiropractic care is effective for a ride variety of conditions: Due to the spine being linked to every part of the human body through nerve tissue, chiropractic care can help pain in your knees, shoulders, and wrists as well as your immune system!
What is a subluxation?
A Subluxation is an incomplete or partial dislocation of a joint.
What causes a subluxation?
More commonly; accidents, slips, falls and activities performed without proper support of the body are seen as the main cause of subluxations. However, the way the human body deals with stress, anxiety, and fear as well as what we take into our bodies such as alcohol, drugs, poor diet and even pollution may cause subluxations.
How do I know if I have a subluxation?
Many of us have subluxations and aren't even aware of them. As with many ailments the symptoms may not present themselves right away. The best way to determine whether or not you have a subluxation is to have a thorough examination.
Are adjustments safe?
Yes! Many studies have documented chiropractic adjustments are as safe and effective as other forms of treatment. Research indicates adjustments are much safer than taking medications and having spine surgery.
Can I be adjusted if I am pregnant?
Absolutely. Chiropractic care is beneficial to the changes the body goes through during pregnancy.
Is it safe to adjust infants and children?
Yes! The process of child birth has changed dramatically over the years. The environment in which many children are born these days may involve unnecessary interventions before, during and after a newborn's entrance into the world. These events can be very traumatic and have a profound effect on a newborn. Your chiropractor may easily adjust his/her technique when treating infants and children.
How often should I be adjusted?
This varies from person to person. Dr. Gibson will advise you based on the results of your exam and the body’s response to care.
What do adjustments feel like?
There are different methods of adjusting the spine. Whether your chiropractor uses his/her hands or an activator instrument you will feel a quick thrust. Afterwards you may feel a sense of well being or calmness and or improved mobility.
What makes the sound that occurs during an adjustment?
Between your spinal joints there are gasses and fluids. When these gasses or fluids are released from these joints during the adjustment it creates a popping sound. The sound does not always happen but if and when it does it is perfectly normal.
Will I feel relief immediately after my first adjustment?
Everyone responds differently to chiropractic adjustments based on diagnosis and severity of your condition. Some feel immediate relief while others may need a few adjustments before feeling any relief. Relief may last quite a while for some and fade quickly for others. It is very important to report how you are feeling before during and after an adjustment with your chiropractor so that he/she may make any necessary changes in the course of your treatment.
Will I feel sore after my adjustment?
It is not uncommon to feel soreness after an adjustment. Your chiropractor will let you know what you may expect after treatment and how to decrease any discomfort you may experience after your adjustment. It is important to follow these instructions to the best of your ability.
Can I adjust myself?
It is not safe to attempt to adjust yourself. You are very likely to injure yourself further. Even your chiropractor must consult another chiropractor if they need to be adjusted.
If my back stops hurting should I stop getting adjustments?
Even though you may feel no pain for a period of time you may still be healing. You and your chiropractor will discuss how frequently you should be adjusted or if you are ready to be released from care.
Do adjustments help with headaches?
The same factors that cause subluxations often cause headaches. Think of it as a chain reaction. Many patients report having fewer, less intense, or even cessation of headaches after receiving chiropractic treatment.
What is sciatica?
Sciatica is pain that radiates from the lower back to your buttock and down the back of your leg.
I suffer from sciatica. Will chiropractic adjustments help me?
Chiropractic care often helps by removing nerve pressure. Stretches and massage therapy in conjunction with chiropractic care may be recommended.
Is there anything I can do over the course of treatment to maximize my results?
Eating healthy, appropriate exercise, stretches, decreasing stress, and limiting your caffeine intake are helpful as well as application of ice and or heat as recommended by your doctor.
What is Activator Technique?
The activator technique utilizes specific protocols to detect dysfunction in the joints of the spine. A hand held instrument is used to deliver a low force gentle adjustment.
